Today, we will focus on how to start competing in bikini bodybuilding competitions, especially without a coach. If you are a new competitor, you must have a ton of questions, especially if you do not want to or can’t hire a coach. So whether you have a coach or not, the first step to competing is choosing –
The right federation – Different federations have different rules and requirements. Let’s check out some of the major ones.
- OCB (organization of competitive bodybuilders) – This is an all-natural federation, meaning you will be drug tested and polygraphed at your expense. This organization tests for anabolic steroids, anti-estrogens, prescription-grade stimulants, SARMSs, and much more. So, be careful! This is a great choice for beginners who want to compete against other athletes who are also natural. OCB shows are smaller and their posing routine is known as a T-walk, allowing competitors to show some creativity.
- NPC (National Physique Committee) – This is the largest and most recognized bikini bodybuilding federation. They do not hold drug tests, so you might compete alongside people using performance enhancers. Since NPC shows are bigger and happen all over the US, the posing routine is more standardized with specific poses required for each category. If you plan to become an NPC pro, you will have to compete in two national qualifying shows and then compete in a national show.
- WBFF (World Beauty Fitness & Fashion) – These competitions are a new and unique addition to the bodybuilding world. These are structured like fashion shows where you do have to show your muscles, but the emphasis is also on the exquisite gown and overall stage presentation you have. There are multiple rounds, including bikinis, evening gowns, and theme wear. Be aware these micro bikini competition suits & gowns are extremely expensive, these are often custom-made, running into thousands of dollars.
- There are many more federations with unique rules and posing requirements.

Now, let’s talk about different starting points and financial situations you will need to determine your prep journey.
1. Consider your dieting history – Have you ever been on a restricted diet plan or maybe followed some yo-yo dieting scheme? Whatever it is, your body will need to adapt to these different dieting patterns and you will need to intake a good amount of calories & protein (depending on your diet plan) to maintain your bulking and cutting process before the competition. This process helps save your muscle mass.
2. Full body assessment – Check for your body fat percentage, this you can do in the gym or at any nutrition store. Take your training journey into consideration. Bikini bodybuilding requires significant muscle mass and the right amount of femininity. If you are a beginner, you should spend more time building muscle before you can start the cutting process.
3. Financial aspects – Financially, bikini bodybuilding competitions are costly. If you can afford to compete with a coach, then go ahead and do it. A personal coach can range from $150-$700 per month. Besides your coaching fee, you will need to budget for jewelry, food, supplements, and federation membership cards (NPC membership starts from $135 annually), show entry fees, your micro bikini competition suit (ranging from $200-$700), shoes, tanning, photos, gym membership, and possibly massage therapy.
If you can’t afford to hire a coach, do not worry! You can research and find articles and coaches on YouTube willing to teach you the secrets of bikini bodybuilding. Just remember, bikini bodybuilding is an expensive sport regardless of hiring a coach or not.
So, decide on some thought and consideration
Good luck, ladies!
